Ghosts of Middlesbrough's past lay submerged for much of the day alongside a landmark that forms an integral part of the town's hopes for the future.

A long-abandoned river barge and jetty are revealed at every low tide outside the entrance to the historical Middlesbrough Dock, accessed along a spur from the River Tees that runs behind Middlesbrough Football Club.

The dock area now forms part of the Middlehaven regeneration project, with office buildings, technology centres, housing and retail outlets all planned to join the existing Middlesbrough College and Riverside Stadium in a £200M redevelopment zone.
